    Our workgroup “Electrochemistry and Electrolytes” is mainly dedicated to energy conversion and energy storage studies. The investigated devices include lithium ion cells, double layer capacitors, and dye solar cells. Our work is thus concentrated in the fields of sustainable mobility and sustainable energy production.
    Our research includes not only optimising and characterisation of electrolytes (i. e. transport properties and thermodynamic properties), determination of phase diagrams including Coulombic liquid-liquid separation, but also synthesis of novel salts especially salts with large weakly coordinating molecular anions and the development of novel electrolytes including electrolyte solutions, gels, polymers, ionic liquids including self-organising ionic liquids.
    Finally new individually adapted computer based measurement systems for the electrolyte research are developed. A recent success in this field is our new impedance scanning quartz microbalance that will be produced in the near future by a German manufacturer.
    Our activities are only possible in close collaboration with colleges from universities and industry. Our activities are supported by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF): project: dye solar cells contract # 01SF0304, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) projects: “DFG-Projektinitiative: Funktions-materialien und Materialanalytik zu Lithium-Hochleistungsbatterien” and “Ionic Liquids” (SPP 1191) and several industrial partners, including Merck, Fortu, and Infineon.
